Package Deal Times were when insurance did not recognize our efforts and refused to pay. Although many of us may still consider times have not changed, the pennies paid us, whether with their blessings or not, is far better than being left out in the cold. But, handwriting on the wall is easy to read, insurance pays less and if you depend on it for your income, you have literally and financially been downsized. The healthcare dollar pie is shrinking and legislation is just around the corner to further limit services and fees. Fighting congressional bills is all well and good, but at your office level, the fight begins with you. If you want to survive the next phase of the battle and insure your financial future, you have to be prepared and package yourself for it. The package begins with your menu of services. Prepare by writing down every phase of patient care. Begin with the consultation, examination, report of findings, treatment protocols, techniques available and therapy if used as well as nutritional and rehabilitative components with financial options. This hard copy review should alert you to any imbalance or weakness within patient management. This is the time to tweak or overhaul specific areas. Take for example your report of findings. Is it verbal or written? Does each patient leave with a basic knowledge of his or her problem and confidence with your solution? Are they prepared to follow your lead and make the financial arrangements to see them through the morass of insurance restrictions and your recommendations? How can you improve and what tools would make it easier for patient compliance? What about your treatment procedures? Are you confident to share your knowledge with patients without compromise? Patients able to see a goal will cooperate. Are you able to adapt and meet their specific needs without diluting their care? Patients unwilling to make a commitment may possibly cooperate, but at their own pace. Pushing and tugging them doesnąt help, while a nudge here and there may. Are you strong enough to hold your ground and let people go if they will not cooperate? If not, you my risk a practice of all indians without a chief. If there seems to be a pattern of uncooperative patients, the problem is probably you. It may be time to take a practice management seminar or hire a consultant, go to www.mbachiropractic.com for on-line learning. Are you confident with your techniques or do you feel you are a weak low back adjuster or fearful working with the neck. Patients come in various packages and you must be available for all. Are you prepared to discuss physical or nutritional rehabilitation? If not, this is the time to take some seminars for license renewal and actually learn something. Insurance may or may not pay sometimes but if packaged correctly, your patients will pay for this important aspect of wellness care. Like financial investments, diversification is best and your best financial investment is your practice. Your product is chiropractic care and those paying your bills are your patients. Be prepared to promote the entire package, your financial future will depend on it.
