On the one hand Every year we face numerous issues that stymie our growth and challenge the consciousness of every doctor. On the other hand, issues abound that further enhance our profession and helps generate new patients with increased chiropractic awareness. Mundane issues such as poor insurance reimbursement with increased paperwork; daily vigilance for state law changes; non-receptive communities and the usual daily grind of staff and patient management keep us on our toes. But on the other hand, many doctors found a specific niche allowing them to reach more people within their communities, create professional alliances, participate in community health and wellness activities while offering their patients a variety of financial options from insurance to pure cash. Be optimistic as you are in control of which hand you show. Be thankful that every car driving by your office is full of people needing your care. Take the simple biomechanics of sitting, it alone produces structural stress which will be taken from car to work and from work to play just cascading from one micro trauma to the next. Add a dash of physical exertion with repetitive wear and tear and then sprinkle a hint of real trauma from auto or sports injuries, add age, bad DNA or just pure bad luck and it is safe to say we will never be without potential new patients. Lucky for us, there are many community advocates helping us meet these poor souls. They may be attorneys who hear the plights of others and would direct them to you if they only knew you exist. They may be allied healthcare professional such as the local GP or internist, gynecologist, podiatrist, psychologist, physical and massage therapists, health food store and spa directors. What about church groups with senior citizens just needing to know what you have to offer. Social groups such as garden and womenıs clubs to union and fraternal organizations desiring speakers and experts to provide added services to their members or just good souls trying to help their fellow man. So many people are primed to help you help others if they only knew .. you. Be optimistic. Our profession is primed to make a giant leap. As baby boomers watch their parents age, they want it better. Yes, medicine makes life easier with chemicals but there are many amongst us that want to age with dignity and mobility and in control not living from pill to pill from ache to more pain. We have a great role to meet their need. People have been more proactive with their health and have questioned their physicians instead of taking advice at blind faith. The internet has opened a vista of information and considering the number of webpage hits, alternative healthcare is way ahead of traditional allopathic medicine. Your community is hungry for what you have to offer. The more successful amongst us have a knack to package their skills well but everyone is gifted with similar skills. How you package it and how you present it is all it takes. For people to reach your hands they must first reach your door. Hone your technical skills well but perfect your communications skills as those depending on you must first know you. The game is reaching them. Start by reviewing your community and who amongst them are ready to help you reach others. One the one hand you can reach out to them but on the other hand you can wait for them. You choose.
