E-mail message this week: nibble or gobble Sometime in mid summer .. I decided to lose some weight and increase healthier lifestyle habits. Besides becoming a Forrest Gump and beginning an extended walking campaign .. I also attempted to change my eating habits. One poor habit was gobbling my food .. devouring a meal in record time and never savoring the subtle ingredients or appreciating the time spent in preparation. Now .. don廠 conjure up crumbs spilling every which way with each chew .. no .. I just took large bites and more large bites and before long it was gone. So .. one change was to prepare a sandwich and nibble the edges .. take time between bites and sustain the same physical needs without the negative effects. By a nibble here and a nibble there .. I not only took more time to complete a meal or snack but also ate less. What a concept. The same holds true in practice management. I影e discussed the foibles of multiple clinics with many DC廣 .. while some do phenomenal well .. many go broke. I影e counseled many new graduates who decided to lease or purchase office space that was way too big and some that was way too small to sustain in comfort and profitability. We all know of colleagues that have huge practices with large overheads and humungous advertising bills which gobble up their profits and find them accumulating little .. while others hoard their income and use none to create more. Nibble or gobble? Last week as I went over my last class lecture .. I touched on goals and goal setting. Reaching goals should be fun even if the effort is hard. Having clear plans in view with action steps should be reachable even if it takes time to accomplish. Setting these parameters too high .. even if noble in deed .. would be to gobble a concept without enjoying it. Nibbling the edges and stroking the concept with tweaks of change only enhances the journey making the final climb that much richer. Nibble or gobble .. stroking or grabbing .. tweaking or stumbling .. each will get you to the top .. just be clear that it isn廠 to much or too hard to chew. Remember to savior each bite.
