New Year Message Just returned after sixteen days in Thailand appreciating more the bounty I have and my great responsible to provide comfort and joy to those I serve. We are an adaptable species able to manage land, curtail hostile environments and domesticate the beast. Thailand, as with many countries with challenged infrastructure and culture, exemplify these properties, but as a pampered member of Dunwoody, Georgia, these challenges were eye opening to me. I went as a tourist interested in beautiful temples, mingling with traditional culture and sightseeing the usual tourist venues such as elephant rides, river boat trips, beautiful gardens and in awe of natural beauty and I was not disappointed. The people are beautiful and respectful with an inner peace towards their lot irrespective of the disparity between those with and those without. Many live and work on the streets; villages have little infrastructure for sewer systems and financial rewards for a hard days labor is miniscule, while others are part of the hustle and bustle of malls and traffic jams making the contrast that much brighter. It was not my purpose to either challenge their lifestyle nor critique the disparities between the classes, I was there as their guest and left appreciating how we as a people are so adaptable and how we make the best with what we have. Thailand is called the land of smiles with the majority Buddhists. Self-reflection brings with it inner peace while attempting to cast aside turmoil and tumult. I had lots of time to reflect on my style of life and the contributions I've made to reduce the turmoil and tumult of those I serve. I saw how hard these people worked and the physical demands that would be unacceptable here. I saw the collective work ethic and appreciation of simple things that created a common end result passing through many hands with little material rewards to show for it. We may not understand their simple but hard style of life, but reflective of what we stress ourselves over, who is to judge? Looking forward, I had time to reflect on how often I was the barrier towards progress and just getting out of the way and letting go was the challenge of the day. I realize now that with little you could create more and throwing good money and energy into the usual cauldron with similar results requires a reassessment before proceeding further. The physical challenges I witnessed did not reflect on the faces of those I passed each day as they were unable to change their lot and made the best with what they had, we on the other hand, have that ability and we should not forget that. I returned to my humble abode appreciative of the basics of necessitates. A New Year brings with it a new direction and I challenge each of you to seize the moment reflecting on what you have and where you wish to take it. Appreciate your ability to adapt and change by reaching out to your community making each life brighter and on purpose. Start with your staff by letting them know how appreciative you are of their skills and work ethic. Continue with your patients by providing excellent service expecting increased referrals and community dialogue. Finally, be thankful of family and friends, as they are the bulwarks that provide strength to carry on. I appreciate all of you and thankful that I returned healthy and whole with the energy to further assist my community and my profession.
