Navigating the Flow We all go through periods where a lull permeates your practice and whatever you do to stimulate new patients or increase energy is futile. This is the flow of life and a practice has a life of its own. But, there are times when things go our way. Practice numbers are up, patients are content while following our recommendations and referral and new patient visits are on the rise. It is at these times when one hopes to bottle the moment and keep the flow flowing. A closer look reveals that the layers of success was not weaved at random. It was not built on the fabric of the day. A positive trend usually means the planted seeds for success have finally bore fruit. Your staff training, adherence to patient services, increased technical skills and generally great tableside manner has finally paid off. If things are working right, it is okay to go with the flow but a successful oarsman navigates his vessel with the flow, the key is in the navigation. I try to bring a positive message each week, something that stimulates me while you guys just listen in. There are ups and downs, an ebb and flow of a practice and often the flow is diverted by personal distraction from either the doctor or staff. As a captain of your ship, you must set your sails to mange the storms brewing in the sea. Preparation is proactive planning providing personal purpose plus phenomenal pleasure. The ebb and flow of practice is best kept at bay by balanced navigation.
