New DC requests any mentoring help starting a new practice E-mail message this week .. Is your lull dull There is an ebb and flow of life as there is in practice. Chiropractors often find seasonal lulls are often dependent on seasonal holidays .. weather .. corporate industry shifts or your/staff level of energy to name just a few. Whatever reason you find a breather in the flow of either new patients or office visits .. this lull can be dull or can be a time to energize and create a renaissance of new ideas or re-tweaked older ones. The natural impulse when the practice is down is to frown and be overly concerned with remorse .. second guessing .. rejection. While many go with the flow and weather intermittent storms .. some travel the road of least resistance and run from adversity and slowly sink deeper into a pit. I recommend you maintain a strong base to draw from and use the energy stored for times like this. For example .. the economy has truly been hard on many people. I have a patient who took a severance package from his employer and left his job. At the same time the economy tanked and he has been unemployed for almost two years. I've been caring for him for many years and these last two have been gradually wearing him down. We have discussed his inability to find a suitable and well paying job at his profession and any solution I recommend .. such as returning to school to expand his knowledge .. hire a recruiter or expand into a parallel profession just goes unheeded .. instead he wallows in continued self doubt and further physical and emotional stress. I am sure you have also encountered similar patients or friends. Although we are often the agent of our own circumstances .. there are times that we lacked influence and must adapt or move on. Many DC's e-mail me with questions and concerns and those that have had an extended financial or professional lull get the same answer from me. What stimulated any lull and what action steps were they taking to stem the tide or reverse it. Have they analyzed their practice .. their ability to stimulate change and what was their rationale for present circumstances and who would be accountable for it and for any changes. Could they outline specific programs dedicated to be used when extra time was available whether it be training staff .. gathering increased technical proficiency .. reviewing and implementing external and internal marketing programs .. sending material to corporate and civic neighbors .. writing letters of all kinds to patients and influential community advocates and/or creating professional alliances. Last but surely not least .. have they taken this opportunity to evaluate practice management and determined if there are holes in patient management .. missing safety nets allowing patients in need to slip through the cracks .. staff complacency as well as complacency of the doctor and has personal upheaval unraveled practice equilibrium. I received a recent e-mail from a dedicated CA who was concerned that her doctor was losing it and requesting my advice to stimulate him. If I was able to clone this CA and share her concern with every office this e-mail reaches .. we would not find occasional practice lulls as dull but as a useful opportunity to leap into the next level of practice goals. Let me conclude with her e-mail. If you have any comments for her or personal stories to tell .. send them along to me and I will place it on my webpage with your permission .. e-mail address and your name held in confidence. Hi Dr. M I hope you can give me some advice regarding my DC. I have been a CA for over 4 years now and absolutely love my job!! However, I am having a hard time keeping my DC motivated about patient care. He seems to have lost his purpose and only asks about numbers and income all the time. How can I help him rekindle those sparks that led him to this career in the first place? I feel as though I am following him around the office trying to carry the positive morale for everyone and the burden is getting pretty heavy. I would like to find a way to make him realize this without crossing my boundaries. Should I just take it upon myself to create a more positive atmosphere and leave him some motivational notes or something? Or do you have some other advice that might work? Your time and advice are appreciated. My answer can be found on my webpage under Cyberconsulting Sharing is truly Caring. In light of this .. I want to share something I sent to my patients within my most recent office e-mail. I do believe that our troops fighting in Iraq deserve our support not withstanding your personal support for the administration. Below the postings is my Support the Troops message and if you feel like it is something you can share with your patients .. please do. Reply to: backnews@bellsouth.net New DC requests any mentoring help starting a new practice: Reply to: chiroworks@earthlink.net Support our Troops: As a veteran during the Viet Nam era, I was appalled with the treatment of my fellow veterans when they returned home. They were demoralized, verbally abused, and demeaned. They didn¼t deserve it. Times have changed, the world has changed and our troops stationed throughout the world, especially in harms way in Iraq, need our support. Personally, I don't doubt the mission they have and hope they return home safely and soon without psychological and physical damage. I mourn those that died, and pray for those that were and will be wounded, held captive or missing in action. If you know of a family with their son, daughter, father or mother in this conflict, keep in touch and lend them your support. Below are some contact numbers and websites to consider lending some support. Also, although we have marveled at the precision munitions used by our military, many innocent people are ultimately hurt. I also grieve for the many thousands of fathers and sons who were misguided by the Iraqi regime and bore arms for it or forced to fight against the coalition forces and left for slaughter, they too will not return home, many without a burial. War is truly hell. I am proud of our military and our efforts to perfect war to a science attempting to reduce collateral damage and lost life. Here are some of the things you can do to show your support for our men and women in uniform in the Middle East. Individuals, groups, school classes, businesses and clubs can adopt-a-soldier. This effort was started by Pam Bates, who¼s husband shipped out for the Persian Gulf in January. It¼s the "Hugs to Kuwait" website, where military personnel can put themselves up for "adoption." "Adopted" soldiers receive care packages including such things as socks, underwear, lip balm, sunscreen and snacks from their adoptive family stateside. http://groups.msn.com/hugstokuwaitadoptasoldier.
