Sharing is Caring Posting this week: Practice for sale in Sacramento Ca .. For sale 2006 ProAdjuster and ProSoft .. For sale two Back Specialist flexion-distraction tables .. Skilled x-ray technician needed to service older equipment in South Carolina E-mail message this week: Loss of Trust One issue that can destroy a relationship is money. For us, it often is the patient owing you for services with futile billing. What should you do, send them to collections, go to small claims court or just write it off and learn a lesson once again, never trust. Your time and energy has a price and should be acknowledged, respected and compensated. It is known within professional circles that an outstanding balance and the means to capture it is one reason for nuisance lawsuits. How aggressive you are in retrieving your fees will reflect on the personality of those receiving your anger. In turn, thankfully not too often, those at the receiving end may lash back with frivolous claims to prevent payment. So, word to the wise, protect your interest way before fees accumulate too high. Be sure you have easily understood financial policies that patients sign off on, such as collection fees if they neglect payment. We have a service, services have fees and to receive these services a transfer of funds must be understood. How often does your utility company look the other way once you miss a payment? We are entering a New Year with both personal and professional resolutions. As the economy continues to sour, there may be times when a compassionate understanding of a patient's plight may be in order but the exception should never become the rule. Be wary of this and on constant alert for a trend of building balances. One way to destroy your practice is to have patients have the upper hand in patient and practice management. Once a breach in policy becomes routine and almost the rule, you lose their respect. Financial issues are one area that should be clean and understood by patient and office alike. Payment agreements must be the exception but followed to the tee. Once this trust is destroyed, you lose both a patient and income and forget about referrals, good public relations and the rest. So, one aspect of practice management to tighten this New Year is financial. Besides your goals of profit and accumulation, have a goal to keep the outstanding balance side of your ledger at a minimum. Use outside sources such as: www.carecredit.com or other venues for patient payments. Dr. Bill Canister who has years of outstanding experience and teaches within every Fernandez seminar goes to his local bank and asks if they offer healthcare loans where he directs patients wiling to take a loan for your care. This may be more difficult in our economic climate, but you never know unless you ask your bank. Take the burden away from you and back on the patient. In a case I am working with today, a patient took the auto insurance check and has neglected paying us. Letters and call have been futile. To reduce time and burden, she is being sent to a local attorney for collection. Such is life. Reduce the burden for 2010 Lack of trust begins with poor policies. Review yours.
