Since my license was dated in 1978, Iıve had awhile to reflect on the state of our profession. What advances have we seen since I began, in reflection, not much or as much as we should. Maybe itıs me but Iıve helped a lot of folks with the tools Iıve used forever. Looking back, I still use the same Thompson table, the same intersegmental traction units and if my x-ray machine didnıt explode from its base a few years back, Iıd probably be getting the same great films I received for so many years. I must admit, the best thing I finally purchased was a film processor after many years using a hand-developing tank. It had its place, allowed me to tweak results but I needed to update and make things easier and less messy. Old timers reading this know what I mean. Time and technology moves fast, but not as fast as we deserve within our profession. I guess if you look at the horizon of vendor products, the most advances has been in diagnosis and patient management. If I were to start today or decided to revolutionize my office, Iıd purchase a digital x-ray unit. Iıd have the most interactive office webpage with patients linking from home their exercise and nutritional programs as well as reviewing their specific concerns with vivid and illustrative videos and pictures. The technology is here and a number of vendors can create and maintain your site with regular updates and linked patient newsletters. The laziest amongst us would still provide the best education via this route. Diagnostic procedures, especially if needed for patient awareness, used to and still consist of bilateral weight scales, postural plumb lines, heat and cold reading devices and comparative muscle and range of motion testing. Many vendors allow us to step into the world of neurology with traveling units testing patients for nerve entrapment, vascular irregularity and discal distress. They have been around for a while but not readily used and deemed suspicious by some state boards. Nonetheless, aside from their intermittent use, the concept makes sense and with more acceptance and reasonableness of fees, would provide as much, if not more, information than an x-ray. The list goes on. Looking back, the landscape of the adjustment has changed as well, although slowly. As the science of chiropractic merges closer with the philosophy, the art of the adjustment has changed or better said adapts to the science. Consider the incredible results we achieve with our patients, just imagine how much further we would go, if we had only the money dedicated for our research that the laundry room of any medical research hospital or school receives yearly. It amazes me how we have survived as a profession as long as we have swimming upstream and against the accepted tide of medicine. Fighting a good fight is one thing, but to survive simply means enough results have demanded our existence, and notwithstanding the overall community ignorance of what we do, we have survived and many of us thrive handsomely. We just need to promote ourselves more and with some renewed energy, warp speed to that new day with new techniques, new diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures and creative and cost effective means to both educate and attract existing and new patients alike. Our profession has also grown outside its comfort zones and pierced the bubble between straight and mixer providing a safe haven for the blenders amongst us. Holding fast to a philosophy or a theory, a number of us have branched beyond the walls of adjusting. Some use cold lasers, mathematical computations for precise corrective changes, various hand and digital adjusting tools, wellness rebuilding nutrition and a myriad of therapeutic and rehabilitative techniques to reduce nerve pressure and increase the human potential. We are moving slowly but moving Itıs great looking back but the future is where its at Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Dr. Joel E.
