From: Dr. Margolies .. 6-20-02 www.chirosmart.net E-mail message this week: What if and Life U. II Loose Lips sink Ships. This was the message and posters during WWII. Rumor or facts flying in the wrong or destructive hands aided the enemy .. and the enemy was usually us. Here in Atlanta .. the heart and lungs of the Life University issue .. the local newspapers have daily accounts of the accreditation issue with quotes from supportive and disgruntled students and faculty (visit my webpage and check under Chiropractic News for these daily articles and more). There is no shortage of hateful and negative doctors that have wished this plague on Life for years. As they gloat with joy and vindication thousands of students .. their family .. teachers .. Life employees .. professional vendors .. community merchants .. local housing and schools .. social .. civic .. religious institutions .. bank loan administrators .. spouse and student employers .. county tax accountants and many others are more concerned well beyond belief and they .. I can assure you .. are not gloating. As you can imagine .. I have been inundated with e-mails from far reaches of the world where my e-mail newsletters go. Doctors question what went wrong .. what are the facts .. what can be done. Equal numbers have been supportive and non supportive of Life. Thankfully .. the few oddball and hateful e-mails have been kept to a minimum but nothing is as telling as a phone call I received just yesterday. A woman called inquiring about a chiropractor for her husband. The first question she asked was where I went to school. The moment I said Life she hung up. Good Luck finding a DC in Atlanta that isn廠 a Life graduate (I know there are many .. but you know what I mean). Loose Lips and public exposure of our internal professional problem will surely sink us .. if not as a whole .. one adjustment at a time. Hopefully it hasn廠 reached the media beyond metro Atlanta. I am staying as close to the issue as I can. I admit .. I show some bias in support of the philosophical chiropractor but I praise the adjuster be they mixer .. blender .. straight. Without an ear to the school administration or a "deep throat" I am at the mercy of hearsay and a few tidbits of info from students and faculty. So .. I doubt if you have any better handle on the situation. When I receive an impassioned e-mails for me to respond to the threat and demise of chiropractic .. I stand back. Who is the guardian and who lost focus? Chiropractic as a legal licensed profession has always had two points of view .. why wasn廠 their representation of both on the CCE? Where has the ICA been .. the supposedly guardian of their point of view and mine? How could Life University .. with a truly grand campus .. multiple buildings and facilities also have a champion basketball team .. men廣 and women廣 basketball courts that even the Atlanta Hawks wished to train in .. an undergraduate school to solidify university status but at the same time downsize and eliminate part time chiropractic faculty due to a financial crunch .. did someone lose focus of the Big Picture .. Chiropractic? A few weeks ago .. I wrote an e-mail titled what if. It was meant to probe the mind and question the "what if" syndrome. Well .. what if Life took the funding gathered for all these sport programs .. coaches .. scholarships .. team trips .. wonderful sports facilities.. Life around the world programs .. infrastructure building or acquisitions .. and who knows what else .. and placed it in chiropractic. What if Life created a chiropractic/scientific team of DC廣 .. Phd廣 .. neurophysiologists .. anatomists .. bioengineers .. medical physicians .. occupational therapists .. ergonomists and sports and rehabilitation specialists. The money spent on a Research Institute for Chiropractic .. affirming to our adjusting skills .. producing papers from respected and skilled objective scientists .. affirming a living model of our philosophy and even physical medicine to a degree would probably be less or no more than monies spent outside of chiropractic. An institute challenging the medical model of health care and incorporating various "natural" approaches of health care. Oh .. this isn廠 chiropractic .. well neither is basketball and undergraduate studies .. great for student morale and basic education but a strained and meandering tributary on the road towards a DC degree and a huge financial and logistical headache. My solution for what it is worth. Life should find objective chiropractors to listen and share opinions .. I am making myself available. Begin a painful period of downsizing before they must .. downsize infrastructure and financial draining non chiropractic programs. Find a suitor for the sports and undergraduate program or slowly disenfranchise from them. Review every department from top to bottom and unload department and division heads that couldn廠 see the forest from the trees and allowed their faculty to pass students when they should have been weeded out prior to entering our honored profession .. that allowed a consistent poor showing in National Board exams without curriculum changes or challenging responsible faculty. Challenge the Board of Trustees to account for time on their watch .. were they a rubber stamp or truly the schools trustees. Audit the financial strength of the school and stop the bleeding. As far as accreditation. I am still unclear of the specifics. But lets say it was differential diagnosis and acceptance of non invasive medical procedures within the curriculum and clinic. When venopuncture and urine testing was accepted in the school labs .. more than 25 years ago .. students understood the global nature of a healthcare provider and accepted it as such .. as means to an end and a qualitative approach to global learning within a structure learning environment. This would be no different. When a school accepts the accreditation process they should adhere to it and try to change the process and processors after the fact. I幟 not privy to the specific framework that Life is forced to accept but it sure beats closing its doors .. years of litigation and thousands of students and families in turmoil and scrambling to decide their future. Dr. Sid is stepping down .. many others should as well. I respect the vision of Life and what these past 26 years has meant to me .. other alumni .. Atlanta .. and chiropractic. The graduates have moved on to help the masses and enjoy the fruits of their labor. Many are in position of influence within their national and state associations. This tradition must not end. I hope that wisdom and respect for the past and future of our profession creates the next step. A provisional additional year for Life .. agreed to by the CCE and Life .. unprecedented at best .. with gradual administrative .. learning and clinical changes taking place within an acceptable environment. To alleviate student anxiety .. Life will have a goal towards implementation. CCE with the assistance of objective educators and "philosophical" chiropractors should monitor and check off each step along the way. If the differences are less than what we expect than so much the better. After which .. a review of the CCE must also be done and determine if all chiropractors are represented and if not why. All learned professions have a deep philosophy and duality of opinions. In conclusion. I still feel this is a political ploy between two hardened positions. This past week廣 Newsweek magazine dedicated half the issue on the wonders and future of medicine. They must grow to meet the future challenges of medicine. Chiropractic likewise must grow to meet our challenges. Growth .. but not at the expense of who we or some of us think we are. I just wonder .. can we all get along. Just what if 鳵 Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings this week: I may be in need of an exam student intern during the next quarters from Life U. I am located about 25 minutes from campus. As most practitioners have experienced in practice, there is a direct link between the Nervous System and Epilepsy and seizures. Most Doctors that I have spoken with recently have recanted countless stories about how Chiropractic care has affected the quality of life of these patients suffering from this horrible disease. In conjunction with the Leon Bender Foundation for Epilepsy, We are collecting Chiropractic testimonials from any Doctors who wish to share their patients' success. I hope that every Doctor seizes this opportunity to tell more people about how Chiropractic helps people in more ways than just back pain and neck cricks. The Leon Bender Foundation is setting up an exhibit at Sci-Trek in Atlanta and will be presenting Medical research and Chiropractic research. We are hoping to be able to post as many testimonials along with research on Chiropractic and Epilepsy.
