THE CHIROPRACTIC ADVOCATE A monthly electronic newsletter of the Chiropractic Diplomatic Corps In this Issue: - New Chiropractic Schools will be changing the profession's International growth curves - China - a new working model - Newsletter policy EDUCATION: How do schools change the growth curve? Take for example the European countries of Denmark, England and France. You will notice that these are the only European countries with DC populations over 300. In New Zealand it took 50 years to attract the first 100 DCs; but after staring a school in the mid 90's they have hit 200 DCs in just a few years. In the last 10 years we have seen the beginning of 11 new chiropractic schools in 9 countries: Brazil (Aspeur-Feevale and Sao Paulo), Canada (UniversitÈ Du QuÈbec ¿ Trois-RiviËres), Denmark (Odense University), England (U of Glamorgan and University of Surrey), Japan (RMIT University Chiropractic Unit), South Korea (Hanseo University - RMIT Chiropractic Unit), Mexico (Universidad Estatal del Valle de Ecatepec), New Zealand (Auckland), and USA (Maycrest International University - Colorado); the most recent being in Mexico City on September 3, 2001. Projections suggest that during the first decades of the 21st Century there will be 1-2 new chiropractic schools every year and eventually 2-3 new schools annually thereafter until the foreseeable future. 19 other countries are now actively pursuing the establishment of a chiropractic program that meets International standards. They are: Argentina, China, Costa Rica, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Peru, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and USA (Florida). Among the 500+ DCs who have registered with the Chiropractic Diplomatic Corps, there are 75 DCs who have indicated they hold qualifications and could teach abroad in a university setting. Are you going to be a part of this pioneer effort? Future issues of THE CHIROPRACTIC ADVOCATE will share important news on this topic and hopefully give you timely updates. Today, Mexico has filled their first year's faculty needs but will be needing more in the next few years. Costa Rica should be starting soon. South Africa has recently been advertising for an open clinician position. Colorado's new school just started in January 2001 and is sure to be looking for additional faculty. For specific contact information or to provide notice of faculty positions available, email the Director at tetrault@chiropracticdiplomatic.com CHINA: It has been suggested by a highly placed official of the World Federation of Chiropractors (WFC) that a successful and desirable approach to bring chiropractic in a new country is through a syndicate or franchise type operation. This offers the best opportunity for a sustained, high quality, standardized system. An entrepreneurial physician in Beijing, China has undertaken just such an approach this year by setting up a chiropractic clinic every three months or so with plans to start 10 clinics and to eventually establish a chiropractic school. The salary is around $1,200- $2,000/mo - reportedly double what orthopedic surgeons make in China. At present, English-speaking DCs are provided translators and integrated into medical clinics. As long as the protocols are synergistic with the long-term objectives of the chiropractic profession, this can be a win/win situation. The President of the WFC, Dr. Bruce Vaughn, who practices in Hong Kong, has already been notified and can hopefully encourage this current program to work within the profession's guidelines. If you have heard of anyone interested in pooling resources together to create a syndicate or a cooperative, for the purpose of setting up a chain of clinics in any country, please send us their contact information so we can assist them in doctor placement, consulting and coaching in these efforts.
