DC needs your script towards a cash practice Have a Great Day Dr. M E-mail message this week .. Insurance or No Insurance Has this happened to you? You decided awhile back to refrain from joining the managed care insurance plans for the obvious reasons, restricted visits, pitiful payments and oodles of paperwork. It was a noble thing to do, a strong statement of independence and a feeing that you were sticking it to them. Years have passed and most working folks have some sort of insurance and they feel that to get their money's worth, they need to use the insurance plan doctors where the care would probably be superior and the cost would be less. Obviously, we know that the level of care is not the issue, but often the co-payment costs are cheaper in the short run. But for the long and necessary haul of spinal correction and stabilization, the pittance saved is just that, a mere token of what really is needed, as the number of restrictive visits or treatment protocols are insufficient for most patient's needs. So, the dilemma is this, was it smarter to stick it to the insurance company or would it have been wiser to join and work within the guidelines with the promise to emphasize service, necessary adjunctive therapy and have them in house to be part of the educational flow. Possibly it would have stimulated increased referrals and extended care beyond the fifty yard line the insurance company got them. I don't know. I joined early on; in fact, I created the Cigna and Aetna's first chiropractic panel eons ago in Atlanta. It started when I was asked to provide a few doctor's names around I-285 and it has grown considerably since then. I made the choice to be in rather than out. The paperwork sucked and the payments were pitiful but the phone ranged and I did my best to convert them over to corrective and maintenance care, where cash was king and we didn't have to fool with insurance. I joined PCD, www.bewell.com a discount group that provided an answer to those without coverage, and with their program, I was no worse off than sending in managed care claims. But, truth be told, being in network placed me also in many PPO plans, where restrictions were less and payments were more. So, it seemed to balance out is some sordid way. Today, many consumers let their fingers walk the keyboard and check insurance internet sites for providers close to work or home. Their first question is, "are you in my plan." They have many choices, as my practice is one of many in the area. If they are wallet oriented, they may hang up and search some more. If they are consumer oriented they may question me a bit further attempting to find out my techniques, if I have experience with their condition and possibly schedule a time to meet and greet. Alas, the last scenario is often not the case, placing a burden on the doctor to have a strong, concise and well oiled script within the front desk CA and more so within the doctor attempting to make the sale, quick and to the point. So, if you have read this far and have some idea how to create lemonade from lemons, I would appreciate your replying back to the DC posting a request within this e-mail, which stimulated this e-mail message. The question was simple, "I did not join any networks and the phone is ringing less and less. What can be done to overcome this problem?" I know there are many DC's reading this that are more than happy to be out of network and haven't felt the heat of despair that some have. Many of you have cash practices, either because you just graduated or decided this is the way to go. Please reply to this posting and if you can cc it to me as well, so I can guide others who e-mail their questions daily.
