There may be weeks or months of saved funds or promised income .. but soon reality hits and it is either sink or swim. The great incentive was survival .. wallowing in doom and gloom just wouldn¼t cut it. If you managed to survive and make a few bucks .. the next incentive was to succeed and perpetuate what you had created. For this you needed help .. it is tough going it alone. Family and staff provided you the leeway to build a practice .. your practice. With room to breath and skillful assistance to gather your thoughts and be creative you witnessed your practice grow and the income stream begin to flow. So now what .. where is the incentive today? Besides keeping your practice growing and maintaining a solid self sustaining business .. the next area of incentive should be to share the profits. Transfer the incentive to your staff .. help them reach their financial goals and provide a vision for their growth as well. Many of us use a bonus system as a carrot before the horse to prod our staff to do more. If proper training and goal setting has been in force .. your staff will see the vision and be on purpose to accomplish their responsibilities and even reach for more. I recommend you consider a staff bonus system in which they can help your bottom line as well as theirs. When was the last time your CA referred a patient to the office or was the instigator of a referral from a patient? How much is a new patient worth? Call it what you will .. finders fee .. payment for increased work .. whatever .. if a staff member is responsible for a new patient offer a bonus. When was the last time your staff networked for you and established community outreach programs from talks to screenings? If this was not their typical job description but took it upon themselves to get it done .. how much do you think it is worth to meet so many potential new patients? Typical bonuses are offered for their work description such as new patient and collection statistics. Fine .. but this is part and parcel of their job .. although rewards for excellent work should be in place.. an extra incentive should be also. If you have been fortunate to have left the survival mode and now go with the flow .. add some spice with staff incentive. If you are still in the survival mode .. deep in debt .. floundering in practice purgatory .. then your incentive is to do something different .. way beyond your comfort zone but first stop and consider what others might do .. ask for help .. place your ego aside and review .. retrace .. revamp.
