I hope y¼all come and say Hi!) E-mail message this week: Is it a gimmick? I¼m sort of getting tired defending chiropractic from the ignorance of the general public let alone from fellow DC¼s. I¼ve received a flurry of e-mails requesting my opinion concerning a recent article in the Chiropractic Products magazine and an editorial in Dynamic Chiropractic .. under the title „Fast Food Chiropractic?¾ Seems that a trend is hitting the chiropractic market in California .. a business group is erecting chiropractic clinics and staffing them with DC¼s offering short term care. Their advertisement reads like this: „To Improve Chiropractic Care, We Had To Adjust Our Thinking¾ .. also with their ad is written: „Nothing complicated. No gimmicks. Just focused, short term treatment.¾ Wow .. what a concept. Is there anyone reading this e-mail that practices any other way .. do you offer complicated care .. provide multiple gimmicks .. have an unfocused approach to your patient¼s welfare .. and do you drag your care on forever? I hope you sit down with your new patient and tell them the story of chiropractic .. offer them the option between getting their initial complaint handled and then onto more care for increased stabilty .. rehabilitation and maintenance. I hope you discuss your specific procedures and approach towards their Health and Wellness well beyond their ache and pain. I hope you offer your expertise and training towards their interest in Preventive Healthcare .. there are no gimmicks here .. you are absolutely focused and short/long term care is discussed and chosen by the patient after a careful discussion with you. If we really consider the percentage of people visiting a chiropractor the numbers are quite small. We have a massive job to reach more .. those at their workstation .. their dance and sports clubs .. their houses of worhship .. their schools .. should I go on. Is there anyone and anywhere I left out that doesn¼t deserve a biomechanical/chiropractic evaluation and if needed specific .. non gimmicky .. focused care? Think about it .. Their advertisement places the perception that the majority .. or other .. chiropractors practice unethical and irresponsible chiropractic. These unfriendly chiropractors charge exorbitant fees and have you go forever. In fact .. they do not even focus on the problem and let you linger in pain or unease forever. Am I right? My answer to these e-mail requests concerning this issue is simple .. there are too many people out there who have never been touched by a chiropractor to worry about the same 11% .. if that much .. of those going. There are no gimmicks offered in my office and I hope not in yours either. When telling the chiropractic story to your patient look at the big picture .. there will be patients that want to get a few adjustments and that¼s it .. all your videos .. workshops .. knee to knee dicussions .. handouts and pamphlets are a waste of time. Did you comply .. give them your undivided and focused attention .. I hope so. There are also patients .. and the trend is widening day by day .. that are looking towards alternative healthcare .. that spend hundreds on health spas .. bottled water .. tons of herbs and vitamins .. areobic videos and infomercial weight loss and toning equipment. These folks want more than a quick fix .. they want what we have .. a dedicated (focused) approach to reduce pressure to their nervous system .. relating their structure to their level of function. Subluxation is a word that may be a gimmick to these business suits (quick fixers) but real to many of us .. they took awhile getting there and may take awhile to either manage or eliminate.
