Fees and Services The majority of chiropractors accept some form of insurance and many of us are involved with managed care networks. We accept their terms and limitations for a paltry paycheck .. I too am guilty. Something is better than nothing and it's better to be in than out is often the motto but is it wise or profitable? The answer could be yes or no depending on the networks you agreed to work with but diversity of your patient base should be your goal as it often even things out. This is a business and as such payment for our services is crucial for the sustenance of our professional and personal life. As a profession we generally are terrible bottom feeders and often play mental games when approaching our patients to pay for our service. Some doctors respect their craft and demand a similar attitude from their staff that a fee for every service is proper and just. These doctors have sound practice management rules and their staff and patients abide by them. For some reason other doctors feel their services and craft are inferior to their medical cousins and just hate rejection so rather than confronting the issue by providing the patients proper schedules .. necessary services and related fees they almost give it away .. downplay the need for necessary care and even apologize when asking to be paid. My recent initiation with the medical world revealed a number of things. First .. they charge and expect to be paid. When you are lying in a hospital bed you can sense the meter is running and you can do little about it. Obviously you should have an advocate with you but you leave little doubt of the services provided as getting home alive and well is your primary goal. They respect their service and appreciate why each procedure is necessary and can probably defend it to the last dime. Their services are expected to have a fee attached and patients expect to be charged. $10,000 was charged to my insurance company for my five days in the hospital and that doesn't include the doctors and specialists and who knows what else is coming to my mailbox. Granted my insurance has negotiated fees with many of the providers .. you know how that is .. and I expect they will be given enough to satisfy them but I expect plenty of bills for co-payments and whatever they can will be sent to me. We need to respect our years of chiropractic training .. knowledge of conservative care .. respect for proper rehabilitative biomechanics and appreciation for an alternative to pills .. potions .. knives that we design a plan for each patients care and assign a fee for every related service to reach the proper results. Rather than attempting to win the hearts and minds of each patient we must capture their interest in them and their value of chiropractic. Insurance pays part of the way .. your goal is to have them go with you the rest of the way. This comes from proper education and awareness. Check your patient awareness quotient .. is it low or high and can you fine tune it to share your concerns with them and outline the proper protocols to achieve your desired results. Fear less the rejection of an informed patient .. fear more those that have little information to decide from. Respect your craft and services this is the only way.
