Cholesterol Phobia .. written by Dr.William Castelli M.D. .. 11-16-98 Many of you have been fooled into believing that high cholesterol is the culprit in your chances of having heart disease. I call it the "Cholesterol Phobia". Would you believe that the medical literature has not proven that high Cholesterol causes heart disease. Matter of fact, there is growing evidence that people with low cholesterol are more at risk than people with high cholesterol. Medical records reveal that cholesterol less than 180 show * a 200% increase in strokes * a 300% increase in liver cancer * a 200% increase in lung disease * a 200% increase in depression (and increased suicide) * a 200% increase in addictive behavior Cholesterol is NOT a deadly substance. Quite the contrary, it the Vital substance from which your brain is made; from which your hormones are made; and from which your cell membranes are made. Cholesterol is so important that your own liver produces 2000 milligrams/day.Understand that when cholesterol does build up to abnormally high levels in your blood it has NOTHING to do with how much cholesterol you ate. Dr.William Castelli M.D.from the famous Framingham heart study notes that people with cholesterol lower than 200 suffer nearly 40% of all heart attacks. Of major interest: The Journal of the American Medical Association dated December 24, 1997 found that the more saturated fat you eat the less likely you are to suffer a stroke. The study found that your risk for stroke decreases by 15% every 3% increase in your saturated fat intake. The point I want to make is serum cholesterol is NOT the major reason for heart problems and is well documented that it has absolutely NO causative effect on CVD (cardiovascular disease). The MOST SIGNIFICANT RISK FACTOR IS HIGH TRIGLYCERIDES! A study recently done at Harvard and published in a journal called Circulation, Vol.96, pp 2520-25, 1997 showed that the single greatest indicator of CVD is elevated triglycerides accompanied by insufficient HDL cholesterol. Your triglycerides should fall between 90-110. Anyone with triglycerides over 130 should definitely decrease their carbohydrate intake. Any triglyceride level above 160 is pathological and requires an ultra low carbohydrate diet and strict avoidance of sugar and certain fruits. If you are interested in reducing your risk from heart disease should get a blood test to document their triglycerides. I also recommend having a nutritional test done to determine exactly which foods or supplements you made need to get well and stay healthy. If you want further information on my nutrition test, please call Debbie 292-0226 and we will promptly mail it out. I hope this letter has been informative!
