From: Dr. Margolies Another (life) cycle has completed and Life University students are taking their finals and those within the fourteenth quarter will be walking down the aisle receiving diplomas. Right behind them will be thirteenth quarter students itching to keep walking but they have to hold the reins for a quarter more. It¼s these thirteenth quarter students that I must reach this coming summer quarter. Those that I taught, along with the other fine instructors at Life, have done their jobs .. for better or worse. Now the onus of success or failure rests within the soul of the student/doctor themselves. Of course there will be factors that will assist one person or another .. location, location, location ... you know the rest ...but even the best of the best will have a hard time of it if they lose that special spark that cranks us up in the morning .. that reaches deep within us when we are down .. that hungers for more when we drip from a work day sweat .. that guides us through thick and thin .. that demands of our energy and time when we least have it .. that glows when the embers are low .. (I bet you want to know what that is???? well, you¼ll have to wait a bit .. keep that hunger burning!) These fine students, from Life and from every DC school throughout the globe will find a world with either hidden traps or treasures. Creation of the day starts with the wake up call. Many find a quick jog will do the trick, while others fine solace in meditation. Some affirm their day with goals and plans while others read the paper and find their inner being there. As the student matures and keeps their head and heart clean and hands active with practice will have no choice but to expand their horizons as Innate will truly provide. Others will whine and gripe that this or that prevents their growth. In either case .. we create our world with little chance to make major corrections .. only within the fine tuning will the orchestra resound. I try to get the message out to these students that we are all successful .. those with the large and those with the small practice. Success is within us .. I¼ve been through this before. Money is a barometer of success as is the number of patients .. but also are the number of vacations one takes per year .. the soccer and T-ball games they coach .. the church and synagogue work they do. These too are barometers. I mention this because these new doctors are fresh and very impressionable .. they have been given a vision .. some built with fear others with hope. In either case ... they must get a grip or handle on to something to steer them through the maze of practice start up and maintenance. My job is complete .. I tell it like it is .. this is a business folks ... treat it right .. do the right things .. give .. love and serve .. and it will be good to you. Screw up and destroy the flame it¼ll eat you alive and deservedly so! Getting back to that burning desire .. that fire in the belly .. these students should have it when they reach out for their diplomas. As with a relay race .. the spark handed from institution to student .. to doctor .. to community .. to patients .. and so on. That spark .. that twinkle in the eye .. that glow that each pregnant woman has just before they blossom .. that reach that each newborn instinctively has .. that grip that holds onto life as if it depended on it. This is it .. we¼ve all seen it .. and unfortunately many of us have thrown it away .. and have watched it leave others without even an urge to stop it .. You may have seen it before ... in fact you have. Go to the video store and rent Rocky 2-10 .. not quite sure of the number. When Apollo Creed was trying to train Rocky for the big event he realized that the spark was gone. That desire (found in the new student .. new doctor) was missing. Running across the beach .. sparring in the Las Vegas gym had no effect .. except more complacency. What was the solution? Where did Apollo take Rocky to regain this missing component of success and drive. He took him back to the streets of Philadelphia .... to the run down .. stinking sewer smelling .. cigar filled ring of the old gym. He pointed to one face after another and focused on the inner self .. that burning desire .. that EYE OF THE TIGER!!!! Have you seen it lately? Did you watch it pass from others? Has the torch that was handed to you weeks, months or even years ago still with flame? Reach deep folks and find that desire for more .. that desire to serve .. that desire to give .. that Eye of the Tiger .. that is the best commencement speech I could give. Dr. M
