E-mail message this week: Ethics A recent discussion between myself and a colleague centered around the ethical and moral fabric of chiropractic and chiropractors in general. Since the setting for this discussion was within the walls of higher learning chiropractic student behavior during their time of absorption and immediately thereafter came up. As with many characteristics of man .. at least to my surface thinking .. moral and ethical behavior are not laced within our genetic DNA code or I hope not. I do suspect that we are a product of our background and therefore as chiropractors .. many of us not coming from a chiropractic family .. poses a specific dilemma. We chose to take a different path and offer a renewed approach to Wellness and Health Maintenance. In social gatherings we are often misunderstood by the lay community .. in professional circles we are often assigned to the proverbial „back of the busū so by default our skin thickens and we form ethical calluses. Oh .. donžt get me wrong .. there are many amongst us .. some reading this now .. that have crossed the social and professional moral and ethical divide .. their path like all of us have a beginning and end .. except they try to take the side roads here and there. I am not writing this to pass judgment as who am I to judge. But our professional judgment is based on decisions that have been nurtured from our personal family ties .. our social gracing .. our schooling and professional callings. To submit ourselves to years of new thought .. anti gravity concepts of technical health restoring technics .. a level of acceptance by allied health providers and issuers of funds to be one step above the surface and getting a moral high out of it .. takes both courage and stamina. Yes .. passing muster as we shake the hands of our academic deans and college presidents granting us a degree is by nature accepting a higher calling to be sure. Our ethical approach to humanity doesnžt rely upon the number of people seen .. fees we choose to set .. philosophical standards .. scientific know how .. no .. this should be a given and offered as such. Our ethical approach to humanity shines from within after being coated with a sheen of service. We have been gifted with knowledge .. information unknown except from the periphery by others .. and therefore needed for their physical salvation. Reaching our community within every aspect of endeavor is our calling to service and therefore offers each of us an ethical edge reached by few. Moral, ethics and responsibility are a triune of attributes that stand together when we tell the chiropractic story. The adjustments are mere mechanics while getting them to the table is the goal. As an instructor in a chiropractic school of higher learning .. even at the meager one class I teach .. I feel it is my highest level of ethics and responsibility to pass the torch lit with information to those that carry it to their communities worldwide. I challenge every instructor .. those teaching in chiropractic schools .. those consulting others .. and each one of us reaching every patient and those they know to pass the torch with pride and character. Ethics .. these are learned concepts best derived from example and practice .. truly after this .. all else will follow.
