Q: Hello Dr M. I have been asked to do a presentation next Wednesday for nurses, admin etc... in a nursing home. They would like to hear more about ergonomics. Wondering if you have any good links I can log on to get more information? I would appreciate any assistance! Thank you A: Thanks for your e-mail. I would start with an internet search using the key words nursing safety or nursing ergonomics etc.. You can also visit the OSHA site: www.osha.gov and use their search engine with the same keywords or just nursing. I think they had some guidelines. If you wish to create your own outline remember the keywords for ergonomics is Fitting the employee to their workstation. A nurses workstation is the hospital or doctors office and they work with equipment or patients in odd positions which equals sprain and strain and wear and tear. Discuss the mechanics of the spine .. muscles .. ligaments and the relationship between posture and function and how prevention and conservative stretch exercises will for the short and long term. They also need to see the value of chiropractic in terms of their wellness and safety. Using a belt when they have to deal with a heavy or awkward patient .. using ice as a preventive step during breaks and when they get home .. describe some simple exercises and how they can do this before during and after work. Remind them that their workstation can be adapted depending on the flexibility and creativity of the staff .. loom around and offer some sane advice. Good Luck Dr. M
