DC needs a LUCC student intern for patient exams and rehabilitative exercise in metro Atlanta .. Associate needed in East Brunswick, NJ .. Independent Contractor needed in Marietta, GA .. Chiropractic Assistant needed in Duluth, GA .. DC is looking for spine, rehab equipment E-mail message this week .. The End Game The other day, I was asked by a patient, what the end plan was. She was referring to when I expected her to be completely well and never a moment more of pain or worry. It was a bit surprising since this patient was cooperative, follows her schedule, mentions how well she has been feeling since beginning care two weeks ago and seems to be a happy camper. Her tone was not confrontational but inquisitive. She wanted to know all, would her spine straighten out and her neck curve return? Was my adjusting and rehabilitative program all there was for her? If maintenance of how she was feeling and the condition of her spine was all she had to look forward to, she would not be satisfied, she wanted to be made whole and perfect. Could you blame her for asking? Considering she was a patient in the care of a doctor assisting her to reach her potential, why wouldnąt she ask and demand an answer. But, I regret that my answers were not sufficient for her at the time and I knew it when I was attempting to answer them. It was a busy time in the office, people were backed up in the reception room and her time was time away from others but her time was special and I tried to make it count. There are no guarantees, various factors determine a patientąs response rate and often maintenance is all there is and that is in itself is much, depending on the condition of the patient and factors beyond your office walls. There were other techniques and procedures, home care products, nutritional approaches, daily living adjustments, specific exercises, rehabilitative and emotional release programs but this was beyond the scope of her insurance and my guess her pocketbook. Before you criticize my response, take a moment and think about the many patients not asking you these questions and where gaps of information can be offered when the office is not packed with people and rushing is not an issue. I recall she had not attended my new patient spinal care class or what I call my Health and Wellness Workshop. Although this slight from my practice protocol would not be the end all for her, it would have solidified her understanding of what my goal for every patient is. Why I decided to choose specific techniques and how they worked. What therapy and rehabilitative programs I recommend and what my menus of services are beyond the protocols paid by insurance. You must have a goal for every patient. During your report of findings ask them what they expect from you and what their goal is. Merge both and show them the way with chiropractic care and services you feel could help. It is difficult to spread this message out during one adjusting session. A group class, which is relaxed, planned and determined is always best. The patient unable or unwilling to attend a class and bring supportive people with them may need some private time but the message must get out. The initial consultation and report of findings is often sufficient but when amber lights still glow with each patient visit, you best stop and get the message across prior to the green light beaming again. The end result of poor patient education is the ultimate end game .. they end their care Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Practice for sale - Columbus, Ohio Chiropractic/decompression center. 20-year established-referral only clinic.
