Student seeks Nervoscope E-mail message of the week: embedded DC Last Friday I attended a medical college graduation. No outstanding difference from my chiropractic graduation 25 years ago or the ones I attended as a faculty member of LUCC from 95-99. The commencement speaker was a previous sports celebrity and major contributor to medical research. His message was to succeed and provide honest and ethical service to mankind after which the students turned to medical physicians before our eyes. As a chiropractor .. I was anxious to hear some juicy material to write about and raise my hand in defiance. But no such luck .. so I will have to complete my message with my own commencement speech to the medical students and their guests. Here goes ....... Dr. Jones.. distinguished faculty and guests .. I am honored to provide this message to all in service towards health and wellness. As medical physicians you have recited the Hippocratic oath that has guided our profession for centuries and anchored us with sound judgment and boundaries of ethics and responsibility. As men and women of learning you will find this never stops. The body is an evolving organism adapting to its environment and dependent on many factors .. some obvious some subtle but always striving to maintain and regain homeostasis. It strives to be whole. If your patient and patience permits you will be witness to its innate ability to heal. As an observer it is your responsibility to intervene conservatively and look for what has usurped this unique gift. You leave here today as learned men and women who will begin your residency in varied disciplines. Learn your art well but factor in the whole person and determine if conditions beyond the stethoscope or surgical knife is the primary obstruction to their innate ability to heal. You have been well trained to localize the symptom and determine a credible diagnosis. If your expertise is lacking the proper skills your colleague seated to the left and right may have the specific training to render the proper treatment. We are a networking profession utilizing our collective skills and training to assist our community in need. I challenge you to hone these skills .. sharpen your eyes and ears for your patient and open your mind to answers to the many questions that will present itself each day. As you have witnessed during your hospital rounds and via discussions with other physicians .. patient complaints can be categorized according to their environment and diathesis to physiological weakness. Illness along with physical instability and impairment often is self induced .. a product of poor choices in diet .. accumulative physical or emotional stress .. faulty ergonomic habits .. habitual accidents or just plain old rotten genes. As physicians and in accordance with the oath you just swore to .. look and appreciate these nuances from norm. Use tools of education .. community activism .. even patient coercion to direct them towards self healing with the magic of medicinal and radical intervention as the last resort. These are noble goals and often unreachable but I charge you to make every attempt. I conclude my humble advice by asking that you partner with others in the healing arts. Some of your colleagues will reach for an alternative approach to treatment realizing that the allopathic approach can always be rendered. These physicians have enough confidence to seek others of like desire to help their patients achieve true potential. Rather than feeling they have relinquished a patient to an alternative healer .. they have instead endeared their patient with their concern. The medical arts have many specialties and so too with other doctors and their associates who have focused their attention on the human frame .. environmental factors both at work or home and natural substances relating to human performance. These may be our brother and sister chiropractors .. naturopaths .. massage therapist .. acupuncturists to name just a few. Open your mind to their skills and work in tandem for a healthier community. I leave you with this last thought. You are skilled in crisis management .. do your part to heal and mend a crisis not create one. Go with skill and in peace.
