From: Dr. Margolies E-mail message: Driveling (meaningless .. perpetual nothingness .. waste of time and space) The other day a DC in Australia requested to be removed from my e-mailing list. He requested I stop sending him more „drivelū (too bad he wonžt receive this one). He was right .. I was sending him drivel .. for that was all he read. I am encouraged by all the replies I receive after each weekly e-mail and realize that my e-mails are not just vapor within cyberspace or plain down to earth drivel .. but to many .. helpful thoughts that make me .. and I hope you .. think. Thinking about thoughts .. I began to understand what he meant by drivel. There was a recent episode of a television newsmagazine concerning people that constantly talk .. never taking a breath of air letting others into their conversation. Seemed there was a name given to this affliction .. Ižm not sure what it was but Ižm almost sure it was something like drivilitis or drivilosis. There is a sub specialty within medicine perfecting a drivelectomy .. although driveloplasty is the conservative route taken today reaming this blight from the throat. There is some debate whether managed care will pay for this procedure .. but those at the receiving end of drivel attest to the need and protest it should not be considered an elective. Yep .. I sure can drivel on. The newsmagazine followed a few drivelers .. a woman and a man both professionals and educated. Each respected for their skills but unable to allow others to enter their conversation and get a word in. Psychological specialists were hired to assist these impaired individuals in suppressing their drivels and team planning was offered to help fellow employees work with their drivel deviants. The outcome was heart breaking .. both individuals were shown video tapes of their conversations with others .. we walked amongst them in social and business circles and realized that this affliction effected their lives and stopped others from listening to their well intentioned message. The psychologist determined that the drivel had to stop and revealed the cause of this affliction .. these drivelers were afraid to fail .. afraid to be rejected .. afraid of others responsing to their ideas .. they feared letting others in and built a wall of drivel. Now doctor .. consider your level of communication. When you approach your new and established patientžs are words measured for a specific response .. Ižm not talking scripted .. but did your point get across? Have you offered them a glimpse of why you feel they need the care and what your inner thoughts are towards it? Have you explained in easy to digest terms and illustrations their condition and your approach towards helping them? Have you called your new patient the same day as their adjustment .. sent them a office welcome letter .. communicated your appreciation for their keeping up with their appointments .. Have you offered them some extra service such as the weekly workshop or a video concerning exercises or some papers that can be taken home and used concerning wellness and chiropractic? Have you communicated with them their financial responsibilities and the need to follow the schedule you provided .. did you give them options? Doctor .. did you also listen .. or .. did you just drivel? Take a few days to evaluate your communications line. Next report .. pay attention to what is said by you .. and them. Next visit .. pay attention to what you say and their response .. have they gotten your message or do they draw a blank? Review what you use to demonstrate their problem .. x-ray review .. pictures of discal and structural distress .. why and how you use the technic you do .. but most importantly .. donžt hog the conversation .. give them room to question and be a part of their care .. we donžt need to block people out .. we need to invite more people in. I hope I kept my drivel to a minimum Dr. M The following was sent to me and Ižd like to pass it along to you: Expectations Treat others with respect, but don't expect to get it back. Show kindness toward others, but don't expect to get it back. Send a thoughtful card, note, or e-mail, but don't expect to get one back. Be patient with others, but don't expect to get it back. Be forgiving toward others, but don't expect to get it back. Offer genuine praise to others, but don't expect to get it back. Never be deliberately mean or hurtful to others, but don't expect the same consideration in return. Do what you do because it is good, not because you expect to get it back. But if you do get it back, you have found a rare and precious friend.
