Diversify As I mentioned in previous e-mails there are only three ways to create an income as a chiropractor. They are fees, volume and services. Obviously a $1 increase in fees will increase your bottom line. Increasing your number of patients will undoubtedly increase the income stream and increasing the services rendered and adding additional protocols will help as well. I can write an e-mail dedicated to each of these but suffice to say that raising fees is the easiest but takes some additional confrontation with established patients. Volume may be the hardest as it entails marketing, public relations and bootstrap practice and patient management to keep the patients you have, stimulate their repeat business and add new ones via referrals and other means. Depending on your marketing budget and skills of communication, it could be quite costly per patient acquired. That leaves us with services. How many of these do you just give away for free, forget to use or worse yet, don't have. It is the nature of our business to be excited about our work. Vendors at trade shows and conventions are taught to grab your attention, stimulate your interest and provide an easy way to purchase their wares. Easy credit and timely payments are common and when presented by a presentable presenter, it makes it too easy for the emotions of want to override the reality of debt. How many diagnostic or therapeutic toys are stored in your office purchased with great enthusiasm but hardly used? How often do you pass by and see them sitting in the corner with great potential but never fulfilled? They are revenue sources if marketed correctly and charged reasonably. The cost effectiveness of every service from the examination to the coldest of lasers is only as effective as the fees it generates. So the topic of this e-mail is diversification. For the doctor grounded in philosophy steering clear of therapy they diversify by utilizing increased diagnostic tools and evaluations. They may include daily living protocols and rehabilitative and re-posturing exercises. If packaged creatively, the patient will desire these additional services and pay accordingly. For the doctor ready to stimulate their practice with further tools of the trade, nutrition, rehabilitation, therapy, specific evaluation procedure on a timely and regimented basis will add to the coffers. So, evaluate what you have in view and what you hid away and begin the process of utilization and fee structure. Cold laser may not be reimbursed as readily as we like but patient results stimulate repeat visits and a reasonable fee will generate additional income. Exercises shown to patients are performed in the office will also generate revenue and is often reimbursed by insurance. Again, for those without coverage, a modest fee will help your bottom line and make them feel you increased their level of performance. Nutrition is a super way of increasing income and interest with your office. Be the expert, attend continuing educational seminars and generate interest.
