Back to the Basics I was reminded twice this week that practice success and fulfillment is derived from keeping to the basics. A course in Business 101 outlines sound fundamental concepts for professional and practice decorum learned and honed after years of refinement. Doctors keeping to these principals and applying them correctly find their professional and personal life easier to manage and savor. By contrast, those finding the fundamentals stale and boring are ever searching for the holy grail of success and worse yet, life fulfillment and joy. Yes, the end product of success is not just financial and material rewards, but the ability to coast through life amongst treasures of greater wealth; happiness, shared personal achievements and partnership with those they hold dear. There is nothing more fulfilling than that. I often relate chiropractors to salmon swimming upstream. Collectively, we seem to squander our achievements while drowning in the septic tank of insurance relations, stress of patient and staff management, low self-esteem and more. Seminars are full of hungry doctors looking for the latest and best forms, flyers, new patient acquisition promotions while methodically meandering through the maze of new patients. Like salmon, some make it to the top and breed new life into their practice fulfilling a destiny ordained upon graduation. Others flounder amongst the stream and almost make it to the top only to fall back after one attempt after another. These individuals have skipped the basic steps towards their ultimate prize and as the fate of the salmon, never reach their ultimate potential. Last night, I was reminded where I slacked off and remiss in practice fundamentals. During a glorious few hours last night, Dr. Dennis Perman from the Master's Circle, discussed the fundamentals of practice and personal success and fulfillment. Was there earth shattering new ideas to fill your office with new patients, no? Was there a new technical approach for patient compliance and mastery of patient financial obligations, no? Were new concepts presented in wizardry fashion to convince us that we are better than we are while providing us a rational reason to swim like salmon, no. Instead he spoke slowly, deliberately and with assurance that our best insurance was getting past the mist of puff and fluff and consider the fundamentals, the inner voice within, the yearning to get to the top and the destiny we are all meant to achieve, success and fulfillment. He represented the old and proud school of chiropractic weaned on the teat of patient compliance because they understood, pleased with results and readily referred others. The old school that didn't look over their shoulder for acceptable insurance parameters and evidence based criteria. No, his was the school that was dictated by the knowledge that the body was meant to be well and can achieve wellness best without neurological interference. Old time philosophy like a fine wine gets sweeter and better with age. Fundamentals are the common denominator of the successful doctors and business professionals. Keeping it simple and purpose driven wins all the time. Doc, where have you strayed from the basics or have you never learned them at all. Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Dr. Joel E.
