Yes, it has been thirty-one years since I met my bride, taking our vows and spearheading a life filled with fun, love and lots of friendship. I hurt for those finding little peace in their marriage or having had problems within any form of relationship. My wife and I have enriched the lives of so many others by offering to our world three glorious children, two married daughters with one expanding our lineage with a grandson, and a son ready to explore his wonderful and successful future. They are a blessing to us and to those they meet. What else can a Guy or Gal ask for? After sharing this with you, let me share what I would like to ask for .. a little more professional respect. While reading our professional publications, it is not hard to find articles concerning payment discrepancies or the nature of controlling practice protocols by managed care insurance companies. In fact, I recently received an e-mail from one prominent insurance provider expressing their view that patient supportive care is often not called for and at worse may jeopardize patient wellness. This e-mail included an attachment of a published article basing their opinion with conceived fact. What rubbish. I have been married for thirty-one years and have been in active practice for twenty-eight. Considering time well spent in chiropractic study, I have been practically married to my wife and chiropractic at the same time. You can say that we have grown stronger through the years and prospered as well. I have no regrets on both accounts, but I wish that my profession had also grown stronger and more cohesive as did my marriage and my practice. Sad to say that as the healthcare dollar shrinks so does those that are there to protect our interests and are obliged to hold the line. But then again, I guess I am part of the problem rather than the solution since my level of political assistance is from afar. Being on the sideline is always easier, especially when being critical. But, every relationship is best based on communication and many would be salvaged and flourish if people would speak their mind, open their heart and often mind their tongue. In this regard we must increase our involvement. When was the last time you expressed your professional concerns to either your state association or board? Have you stood your ground on the merits of your practice procedures and treatment plans or just meekly accepted the few insurance coins and the approval of a few more visits. Are you even a member of your state or a national association? It will not be money ill spent, Your voice and your dollar is as strong and as good as the next. By not being involved you lose your voice and have little to complain about since your support is worthless. Consider joining and if you, like me, take part from afar, at least you are in support and when the opportunity presents itself you can increase your involvement in a more meaningful way. Setting aside the insurance dilemma, do you have a back up plan for patients needing your care whether therapeutic, supportive or maintenance? In other words are you communicating with your patients in one form or another? Last week, I wrote about education the essence of communication. Patients will follow your lead just like a marriage, if you share and communicate and discuss openly where your professional relationship is headed and where you need their cooperation and support. Not everyone will accept you or your thoughts but those that do will bolster your efforts and provide more patients to create and sustain the practice of your dreams.
