I heard a radio broadcast with Dr. Joyce Brothers .. the seasoned radio psychologist. As is often the case .. I forgot the bulk of the conversation but held onto the pertinent ideas that needed remembering. This is what she said .. "vacations were once a luxury but today are truly a necessity." Makes great sense and I heard this was over 20 years ago. When was the last time you placed your mind and body on hold .. chilled out? Considering our professional emotional and physical roller coaster .. we deserve a break sometime. Vacations are great whether on the beach .. mountains .. exotic ports or quiet time alone. It matters little of the location or circumstances .. it matters more if the quality far exceeds the quantity. I recommend the following. Find private time during your working day. I treasure a half hour during my lunch break where I lie down and chill out .. others may medidate. This siesta has worked well for me and provides the energy for a busy afternoon. I also love movies. I go at least once a week placing my brain on the seat next to mine and just go with the flow. This has been helpful to me. I am not a reader .. you may find the same peace reading a book. I am also a walker and listen to books on tape. Each walk is another chapter with a layer of stress removed. In other words .. find some special time for yourself .. it doesn廠 have to be much but is yours. Now .. about the practice. Are you a driver .. riding your patients and staff the same as a sheep dog manipulates their flock? Do you work your staff haggard and force your patients through managerial hoops and loops. In other words .. is your office a nightmare or a fun place to be? Policy and procedures are meant to keep the ship afloat and once in place rolls on its own. Once you create the flow and tweak it to perfection .. relax and let it run. Staff is the engine that makes the practice move .. engines need maintenance. They too need appreciation and acknowledgement for a job well done and support to be further creative. Patients are not cattle. They have emotional turmoil along with their physical impairments. Coming to your office should be a respectful and loving experience. Instinctively they should feel compelled to share their experience with others and create a win fall of referrals for you. But .. if you drive them through administrative hoops they will be quickly disenchanted and leery of your procedures and advice. They too are searching for relief of their emotional and physical roller coaster. Is your office the place or is it a procedural nightmare? Just a few thoughts as I take a few days to chill out and recharge my batteries. Remember this .. with all that is going on at Life University and the Chicken Little廣 coming out with the Sky Is Falling .. life and Life will carry on.
