E-mail this week: Character .. 9-27-98 We've all heard the term .. character building or he/she has a strong character. What exactly does this mean and how does it apply to chiropractic? Well .. this weekend I attended the Georgia Chiropractic Council's Fall convention. Sitting in the educational classes necessary to satisfy my yearly post graduate hours .. I marveled at each speaker's enthusiasm for their topic. Dr. Bob Hoffman was giving us an insight on how to meet fire with fire by clipping health and wellness related news reports found in many of our local daily papers .. news that justifies our reasoning for natural alternative health care. From medical specialists to research scientists our strong resolve to be conservative and offer this advice to our patient's and community is justified in black and white. If you haven't the time or energy to collect these articles .. contact Dr. Hoffman at 1-800-POWER-91 .. for a modest fee he will send you quarterly clippings and how to use them. There were two dynamic young chiropractors .. Drs. Stuart and Theresa Warner. Their enthusiasm to reach the family .. beginning with children .. reinforced my own desire to tell the chiropractic story to my patients and their family and friends as it was told to me in 1972 by Dr. David Singer. David was in practice only six months when I visited him for my first adjustment. As I watched him peel a tomato .. we spoke over his lunch break .. he told me the simple story of chiropractic and better yet had me sit through a slide presentation. The unique part of this presentation was the narration .. his own young patient's narrated the script .. I just sat there and pushed the next slide button. In their exuberant child's voices .. they told me that my body can heal itself .. just take the pressure off the nervous system .. see this was that .. that was this .. it was fantastic .. and it sold me. Sold me enough that my own three children have lived the chiropractic way .. and I cannot thank David Singer enough .. it sure built my character. I mention these three doctors because they touched me and helped build chiropractic character for myself and the others that also attended this weekend's convention. How about the seminar or convention you attended this weekend or will the next. We have giants in our profession each with a strong and big hearts and character upholding the virtues that make our profession great. You want character building .. well .. attend chiropractic college .. open your own clinic .. reach and meet your community .. turn the power back on with your adjustments .. sit back and see how the marvelous body works. It takes a special character to make the proper judgment calls .. working with our patient's intrinsic innate intelligence and also realizing when stepping outside our world will assist the patient we have been honored to assist. A strong character can be weighed by your resolve. If you know in your heart of hearts that your patient needs care beyond your perception of their ability to pay or their reluctance to follow a schedule .. and take this doubt into your recommendations .. your character has dropped one notch. If you have an ability to provide a lecture on wellness class to a church or civic club and an your inner fear prevents you from reaching those that need to hear your message .. your character has dropped a notch. If you find that not sticking up to detractors within your community at the expense of those that are in ear shot of their negative thoughts forcing them continued years of illness or pain .. your character has dropped one notch. But .. if you look for help to correct these weak areas of character .. by attending the various seminars and conventions given just about weekly throughout the country .. your character will again soar .. just by making the attempt .. this is the ultimate charcater building. This whole Koren mess has taught me about character. I know Dr. Koren and know how this has affected him and his family. I also know that many of us feel that this entire mess concerns only Tedd Koren and the FTC .. with no affect or concern by the chiropractic profession. I also know that reading some of the material written in only a few of his pamphlets may be construed as overstatements and possibly inflammatory .. it is nothing less than opinions and factoids that were commonly used by our profession from the seventies on based on readily used surveys and Ph.D opinions and briefs. I also know that many also feel he is requesting money to bail him out of huge legal fees .. maybe y'all right .. but I don't think so. Character is sticking to a principle .. character is weathering the storm when the clouds become gray .. character is reaching out to friends and colleagues with all your dirty laundry hanging in the air as Tedd Koren has and is. He has character .. let me tell you. Character is also found in others who leave their personal beefs and feeling aside .. who are leaders who can make the oceans part and the winds blow in the opposite direction .. Chiropractors who can appreciate a colleague who paid his dues for us who deserves a minute of their time and an appreciation of the dilemma we all face. I've learned that many have stepped forward and see this for the problem it is .. their character has increased a notch plus .. but there are those who I know know better .. who have stuck their head in the sand and their character has dropped a huge notch .. I hope they will turn this attitude around. It's been just a month since my first e-mail alerted the profession of this entire mess. Tedd Koren .. in my opinion .. may have said and written much that he probably regrets now but in panic did what he had to do. Character means you will not let your personal ruffled feathers let the soaring we all need to do keep us down. Character building is a daily endeavor. Are you a notch up or a notch down .. there's always time to change .. the choice is yours.
