E-mail message: Office Evaluation This past weekend I attended two Life University graduations .. sitting with my black cap and gown and looking all of a professor .. I listened to two guest speakers and soaked in the moment(s). One of the speakers was Dick Gregory .. the civil rights activist and comedian and all around promoter of better health. His son was in the graduating class and his other nine children were present to cheer them on. During his presentation .. he reminded us of our responsibilities as chiropractors and true health care providers. Funny how a layman can relate and challenge us to tell the chiropractic story and provide the gift of service to our community .. while many of us have to be reminded. Giving some thought to his message my mind began to race in various directions. Concerning my office: Have I been honest with purpose and fruitful with knowledge? Did I actually plan each patient visit as if I were the patient and wanting an undivided and focused adjustment? Was my level of communication so tight that there was no chance someone would misinterpret my goals and why their care was necessary? Was every aspect of patient orientation .. first phone call .. case history forms .. examination .. mini-report of findings .. x-ray review .. report of findings .. schedule and financial responsibilities .. referral seeds planted and a harvest of new patients nurtured? Did each patient leave the office with a renewed understanding of their responsibilities relating chiropractic .. health and wellness .. for their friends and family? Was I active with internal and external chiropractic awareness .. did we have timely special events .. community promotions .. some logical means to share our good fortune and good news with others we meet and wish to meet? Have I updated my skills .. attended a chiropractic seminar .. read some journals .. reviewed my findings with my staff? Was I sharing my chiropractic enthusiasm with my patients and community? Listening to Dick Gregory allowed me to realize that we have a greater job than I thought. I was listening to every word .. creating an implementation plan .. focusing how I幢l share his wisdom with others. He spoke of the horrors of our present times. Ghetto drive by shootings .. drugs and alcohol .. paranoia surrounding every suburbanite fearful of inner city youth and personal harm. As he related the reality of present day city living .. he also mentioned that as a nation we have bigger safety issues .. a deteriorating and degenerative health potential .. degenerative and preventable diseases seemingly rampant .. mental anguish and lost hope pervading too many .. with all this he contrasted the fearful individual barricaded behind closed doors .. afraid to venture outside their homes .. eating hot dogs .. drinking cokes .. smoking cigarettes .. devouring chips .. cakes and candy that provides comfort .. safe from the ravages of their external environment all the while destroying their internal environment and forcing statistics ever higher towards sickness and disease .. far more a threat than shootings .. gang threats .. etc. Sickness .. Disease .. Personal Burnout .. Premature Death. Probably the beginning of personal burn out .. office slowdown .. staff ineffectiveness .. patient disorganization .. is when the doctor loses the motivation that drives his or her office. We are all at the mercy of a transient wind .. flow of negative energy that comes and goes. A patient tests your resolve .. another isn廠 getting the results you wish .. you are forced to leave your comfort zone and extend a foot at a time outside the warmth of sameness .. you need to testify in a deposition or court .. a possible malpractice lawsuit is pending .. or .. personal pressures are upsetting .. bills .. family strife .. grass looks greener across the street .. not satisfied with your life .. should I go on. Life is always a matter of transition. We are the masters of our fate .. no matter the barriers placed before us. A practice on the skids always has the potential to right itself. A personal challenge is often solvable when you step outside and look objectively meeting the challenge head on. Health concerns can be reversed if you take control .. grasp at the problem .. create a sound and health regaining solution and let the body heal itself .. if unable .. work with the miracles that surround you .. it will guide you innately. You can shift gears in mid stream if you allow it to happen. The gear shift of life has a reverse as well .. but be careful to watch and think closely before you shift one way or the other .. you are in the driver廣 seat. Fasten your seat belt .. now .. go straight ahead. Dr. M Comedy concerning Managed Care: A managed care company president was given a ticket for a performance of Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony." Since he was unable to go, he passed the invitation to one of his managed care reviewers. The next morning, the president asked the reviewer how he had enjoyed it, and he was handed a memorandum, which read as follows: MEMORANDUM 1. For a considerable period, the oboe players had nothing to do. Their number should be reduced, and their work spread over the whole orchestra, thus avoiding peaks of inactivity. 2. All twelve violins were playing identical notes. This seems unnecessary duplication, and the staff in this section should be drastically cut. If a large volume of sound is required, this could be obtained through use of an amplifier. 3. Much effort was involved in playing the 16th notes. This seems an excessive refinement, and it is recommended that all notes should be rounded up to the nearest 8 th note. If this were done, it would be possible to use paraprofessionals instead of experienced musicians. 4. No useful purpose is served by repeating with horns the passage that has already been handled by the strings. If all such redundant passages were eliminated, the concert could be reduced from two hours to twenty minutes. 5. This symphony has two movements. If Schubert did not achieve his musical goals by the end of the first movement, then he should have stopped there. The second movement is unnecessary and should be cut. In light of the above, one can only conclude that had Schubert given attention to these matters, his symphony would probably have been finished by now.
