From Dr. Margolies How many of you have been in an auto, sports or work injury? How many of you have had the privilege of assisting patients after an injury such as these? Would you agree that each of these patients or yourself, needed the assistance of chiropractic care? I would emphatically. As I attempt to teach in my class at Life University, and as written in chapter three of the Smart Start Book, there is a need to have alliances with various professionals in your community .. this includes other healthcare providers. Those with a copy of the book, I recommend you review chapter three and determine, within your „farm,¾ where these professional are. Let¼s look at one of these ..and that is the emergency room physician within your local hospital. Does this sound strange that a chiropractor recommend working with a medical physician .. an ER one to boot? No, in fact you are not working with anyone .. but for someone ... and that is the patient .. the injured party .. the person needing the care .. stability .. rehability .. and correctability of their immediate trauma and possible gross subluxation. The physician¼s at the local hospital used to be reluctant to refer to chiropractors or anyone outside the hospital network, but with managed care breathing down their throat as well .. they are more apt to refer out and more often. Let me ask you one other question. Do you know the names of the ER physicians in the local hospitals near your office? Do you call for a fax of the ER notes and radiology report of each patient that was seen by them? Well why not .... how do you expect to assist their patient¼s that get a handful of medicine and nothing else? How do you expect to reach out to their inner being to do the right thing and recommend these patients to seek alternative care? No one knows you but you .. I recommend you get on the phone today. Call each hospital and ask for the emergency area. Ask for a listing of each physician that is normally on staff .. if there is a skeleton crew or multiple physicians on a rotating basis, address the letters and/or phone calls to them as a group. Individual names and addresses will get better results. Remember, these e-mails go out to various factions within the chiropractic world. This and other ideas that I present should not deter you from your philosphical or physiological platform. As I discuss in class .. have no qualms about how they get in .. once there ... tell them your chiropractic story! Below is a letter that can be used .. obviously make the changes that fit your personality. But get the names, address the letters send one, the same one, every two weeks and include your office card .. a generic newsletter if you have some, and wait for results. If you feel bold, you can call after a few letters go out to determine if they have been received and if there are any questions that you can answer. Okay, below is my copy .. change it at will. For the patients that come to your office from this one endeavor and get results only because you took this action step .. for them and those they refer .. all the time I place in these e-mails will be worth it¼s weight in gold. Below is the letter you may use. Note that I place location, hours, etc. „This is a letter of introduction. We have recently had the privilege of seeing one of your patients that came to your emergency room after a motor vehicle collision. We called for the ER records as well as any x-rays that were taken. As a chiropractor, being in practice for over 19 years in the Tucker area, I have had the opportunity to assist many patients with the residuals of a soft tissue injury. These may be the result of auto, work or sport injuries. My method of chiropractic care is conservative and conducive to the rehabilitation of the injured area. Enclosed please find some previous post graduate work that I have taken to assist me further. If you find the need to refer a patient for further „hands on¾ care and they live in the Tucker, Northlake, Decatur, Lilburn or Stone Mountain areas, I would appreciate your consideration of our office. We are presently an In-Network specialist within the Cigna and Aetna HMO and PPO program, as well as others. We are very close to Northlake Mall and one mile outside the perimeter, I-285. Our office hours are from 9-7 Monday through Friday. If you care to discuss this with me, either via the phone or in person, I would be more than welcome to meet or speak with you or members of your staff. Please pass this information to other physicians as well as para-professionals that would assist a patient in need of a referral.¾ Dr. M
